Warm weather, sunshine and beautiful surroundings made for a lovely wedding day for Mandy and Pete. The couple chose Rose Sachs Gardens, located in Parley’s Canyon, as the setting for their big day.
It was a great day for all. In fact, the bridal party and guests got an extra hour of dancing when the bus that was scheduled to drive everyone down the canyon got stuck. While waiting for a truck to pull the bus free, everybody danced and partied – truly a fun night despite a stuck bus.
Thanks Pete and Mandy, it was fun!

Robert and Sheila’s 11×14 Album, with 100 sides holding 197 images! Sheila had the main color in sunshine yellow with an accent panel of optimism white. We also had some fun with this awesome album by embossing their names along the far right side. It made the look more modern, and Sheila definitely likes modern! Here are a few of my favorite spreads:

When Becky and Ben suggested we take photos on the her family farm and include her vintage Mustang and a friend’s custom hotrod, I was thrilled. The Mustang is Becky’s car that’s she’s spent several years restoring, and she’s done a fantastic job.
We had a blast roaming around the farm laughing as we took photos. The spring sky cooperated and provided beautiful light on the rustic setting making for a perfect photo day.

I spent last weekend at The Canyons playing and having fun. It reminded me there’s year-round fun to be had at this Park City ski resort.
These are a few photos from Jessica and Kurt’s outdoor summer wedding. Guests were treated to breathtaking gondola ride up the mountain to the Red Pine Lodge for the wedding and reception. After The Joe Muscolino Band provided music for dancing that lasted all night!
Summer will be here soon, bring-on the outdoor weddings!

Fun, laughter and plenty of smiling! There was all of that and more on Alyson and Cole’s wedding day. The fun-loving couple was married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. From there they had a ring-ceremony and a reception at a relative’s house, where the fun and good-times continued throughout the day. Alyson, the radiant bride, had a smile so contagious it inspired everyone to smile too!
Have fun, smile and enjoy your day, that’s what I say!

The day of Peggy and Dustin’s engagement shoot turned out to be bitter-cold day and they spent the entire time cuddled together to stay warm. We decided a University of Utah theme would be great since they are both big fans and graduates of the fine university (GO UTES).
Wandering about campus taking all kinds of great photos was fun, and I somehow called Dustin by the wrong name. Good thing Dustin has a sense of humor because the fun began when every time he was addressed he received a new and different name. “Larry, look here and smile,” or “Harold, smile.” Anyway, It was a fun day and we survived the cold, but I’m convinced they would have cuddled anyway regardless the weather.

After watching the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games, I had to go through my archive and post some of my photographs from the 2002 games in Salt Lake City. These photos are from the USA vs Russia Game, which happened to be played on the 22nd anniversary of the 1980 Miracle on Ice. I have photographed countless hockey games, and in my opinion this game was the second greatest game ever, the first being the original game between the two countries in 1980.

An enchanted Princess, a noble Prince and an evil magician all dancing about the stage. Yup, it’s Swan Lake, and Ballet West’s production of the beloved ballet is spectacular. These are photos from the dress rehearsal, but the tragic love story opens tonight at Utah’s Capitol Theatre. Be sure to get you tickets (YOU should take your sweetheart, just sayin’). There are performances February 12, 13, & 17-20, 2010.

Here are a few favorite photos from Mandy and Pete’s winter engagement session. I must say, the morning we took these photos it was frigid, but the sunshine did provide some warmth (and really awesome shadows). We roamed downtown Salt Lake looking for cool (pun intended) spots to take photographs and found all sorts of great places including a purple wall that matches their wedding colors, yay us!
I’m glad they were willing to brave the weather, it made for great photos!

Last week Logan and I set out with the Ultimate Utah Wedding couple, for photos at Sunrise Riding Stables in Bluffdale, Utah. Despite the frigid weather, our trusty steed, Diamond, posed beautifully as did both Whitnee and Nick.
It always makes for great photos when a bride and groom are willing to brave the cold and get on a horse in wedding attire – thanks guys!
Here are a few of my favorite photographs.
Also, Check back soon for Logan’s photos!

Since it’s freezing cold and winter, I thought I’d revisit summer.
What says summer better than a wedding at a Moab winery? Marshall and Ashley had the perfect weather for an amazing wedding at Red Cliffs Resort Winery. The resort is located on the banks of the Colorado River surrounded by red rock cliffs – truly spectacular.
Location aside, Marshall and Ashley were great fun and I’m happy I was able to photograph their big day.

Looking at Michelle and Aaron’s wedding photographs, I notice one major theme. Their eyes, look at their eye contact, and the way they look at each other, the connection they have, I think it’s amazing. Also notice the flower-girl and how she looks to Michelle, wow.
Photographing weddings is the best job ever, I get to be around happy, loving people, and that sure beats working.

Guess what? Yup, more black and white photos. Know why? It’s simply because I really like B+W photography. Everybody needs to really like something, or someone. Tara and Jason really like each other, that’s why they got married at Rose Sachs Gardens.
I hope you have something you like, or someone you really like, or BOTH!

Sir Frederick Ashton’s hilarious one-hour telling of Shakespeare’s moon-lit masterpiece “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” returns to Ballet West for the first time in over ten years! Along with the Ballet West premiere of Ben Stevenson’s stunning, romantic pas de deux, Three Preludes, and Bruce Marks’ tribute to Utah’s Mormon pioneers, Songs of the Valley, this diverse program offers a taste of what ballet is all about.
Okay, I “borrowed” that text from Ballet West’s website (I never know what to write – I’m a visual guy), but I suggest you visit their site and buy tickets! These ballets are spectacular, full of energy and emotion, pure ART!

Recently, I had the good fortune of photographing a truly special day for GT, Malinda and their children. They’ve been married for years, but decided to re-new their wedding vows and involve their children. A highlight of the day was the “Sand Ceremony,” where each of them added a container of sand into a decorative piece symbolizing their family as one. Truly a day focused on family and love.
I could go on about this wedding, but I’ll let the photos speak instead…

Adrienne and Brad’s summer wedding at Log Haven in Millcreek Canyon was beautiful. Before the ceremony, the three of us did some exploring in the canyon finding some spectacular locations for portraits. Millcreek Canyon and Log Haven truly are amazing – as were the happy couple. In addition to meeting great people, it’s fun to go exploring and discover new places to take photographs. I’m lucky, I get to be with happy people on their wedding day, and explore beautiful Utah.

Accident, or art? These photographs were made by my camera, not me. They’re all misfires as my camera rolls about in the trunk of my car, or simply gets bumped and decides to release the shutter. Accidental photos are proof that great things can happen by mistake… if you’re looking.
Happy Monday, and look for great things everywhere, even in mistakes!

As a wedding photographer, it’s my job to be aware of energy and emotion and to capture these feelings photographically. Creating images that show love or evoke emotion is my intention, Scott and Melanie made my job easy… it’s written all over their faces! A picture really is worth a thousand words!

Early in my photography career, I spent countless hours in the black and white darkroom at The Salt Lake Tribune. I learned from veteran photojournalists who spent decades mastering printing techniques and producing works of art on a daily basis.
I consider myself fortunate, the darkroom was a great place to learn photography. Computers, jpegs and megapixels are amazing, but somedays I miss the darkroom.
These images from Bill and Megan’s wedding at Empire Lodge are digital photos made B+W in photoshop. I only use photoshop techniques that could be reproduced in a darkroom.

Dance is one of my favorite things to photograph, capturing the energy, the grace and motion is a challenge… and a thrill. Recently, I photographed Ballet West’s “Curtain Up” at Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center. Ballet West dancers choreographed six selections, dancers from Ballet West II and Ballet West Academy performed. Top selections will be included in the 2010 Innovations program.
Ballet West’s 2009-2010 season promises to be spectacular, so check them out!

Weddings have energy, an energy of love and romance. Andy and Lindsay’s Park City Wedding also contained the energy of “FUN.” First, the ceremony was held at The Colby School in Park City, Ut. From there, we went to the White Barn for portraits. Friends and family rode bikes as Andy and Lindsay rode in a rickshaw along Highway 224 as motorists honked and cheered the newlyweds. After their reception was held at the Legacy Lodge where the fun continued.
When planning your wedding, make sure fun is on your guest list.

Black and white photos speak to me – not sure why, they just do. Maybe it’s the depth, texture, richness, and impact. Perhaps it’s the feelings they convey… I don’t know, but Kate and Jason’s photographs in B+W say “romance,” which I say is fitting of their relationship.
Their wedding and reception was held at Memorial House and the flowers were from Every Blooming Thing. Also, Kate and Jason both dance for Ballet West, tickets for the 2009-2010 season are on sale, go see them!

Often times, my photographer friends and I will talk and rave about all the great places we go and the amazing people we photograph. They’ll talk of a wedding in an Italian Villa, or a castle wedding in Scotland, but I have them all beat! A few miles up Emigration Canyon is the legendary Ruth’s Diner , the location where Chris and Erika were married. As far as I know, this was the first wedding there, and likely the only wedding at the historic diner. Great location aside… the best part of my “job” (I use that word loosely since what I do is fun) is the people I meet. All the couples I photograph and I become friends, but, I truly consider Chris and Erika my new good friends.
So, with that said, head up the canyon to Ruth’s Diner for some great food and say hello to Chris and Erika, they’ll likely be there since it’s the family restaurant. And tell them Ryan sent you. And check out the amazing flowers WITH peacock feathers, no less, from the phenomenal Every Blooming Thing.
